Big girls Don't Cry
"It's time to be a big girl now"
Big girl in a Skinny World was an idea I borrowed from a Marie Claire plus size stylist who launched a column in the magazine- in Fall of 2009- for their full figured readers. I was inspired to investigate the perception of plus size women in the media and the modeling industry. In my research , I came across a lot of mixed opinions from men and women regarding the current dynamic in the fashion industry of favoring smaller framed supermodels.
Several of the individuals I surveyed were a bit apprehensive in responding to the questions I asked about plus size models and their impact in the fashion industry. My goal was to be as honest and brutal as possible, in order to find out what the viewers of media really think about these women. Surprisingly, the overall consensus was that there is a favoritism in the industry and full figured women need more exposure and support.
Personally, this topic is very dear to me, although, I've always been an 'average' size 6 and I've even dealt with discrimination based on weight or body type. There's nothing wrong with being a size 0 or 2, however, there is something wrong when the media promotes one type of figure over another. This is the main issue in American and European media. There are women who are naturally thin and women who are naturally full. There is no right or wrong answer.
